Since its inception the CPRP has relied on creativity, innovation, and teamwork to evolve and develop. Examples of some of our accomplishments follow:

  • Since 1989 we have continuously monitored treatment outcomes using multidimensional “gold standard” measures.

  • We were the first VA pain program to develop and implement a comprehensive pain clinical pathway (1991) which has served as a VA national model.

  • In 1991 the CPRP treatment team was selected as a model clinical team by the VA funded Interdisciplinary Team Training Program.

  • We developed the first VA Pain Treatment Center Directory (1992).

  • We established a facility-wide pain treatment algorithm in 1992 that has been “exported” to numerous other VA medical centers.

  • Selected as a VA Clinical Center of Excellence for pain treatment in 1996.

  • Received full three-year CARF accreditation in 1996 in our first try, and were cited by the CARF survey team as a “model pain program”.

  • Selected by VA National Headquarters to participate in the production of a CARF preparation video developed for a VA-CARF National Training Program.

  • Initiated a cooperative effort with the American Academy of Pain Management to modify and improve the National Pain Data Base for use in VA pain treatment settings (1997).

  • With support from the Sunshine Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 8) we organized and held a Pain Networking Conference in September 1997 to facilitate coordination of pain services at the 7 medical centers and 14 outpatient clinics within VISN 8.

  • Designated as the “Premier Pain Treatment Site” in the VA by VA National Headquarters (January 1999).

  • Selected CPRP staff have been recruited to serve on several VA national pain committees to assist in implementation of the VA's Chief Medical Officer’s “Pain- The 5th Vital Sign” initiative.

  • Fully reaccredited by CARF in October 1999 and October 2002.

  • Designated as a VA National "Program of Excellence (as part of PM&RS) by Headquarters in October, 1999 and again in October, 2001.

  • Selected nursing staff presented with the 2004 VA National Office of Nursing Services Innovations Award.

  • Winner of the prestigious Secretary of Veterans Affairs 2004 Olin E. Teague Award.

  • Reaccredited by CARF in 2005.

  • Designated as one of six Clinical Centers of Excellence by the American Pain Society in April, 2007 (link to press release).
